Overview

The Department invites applications from suitably qualified and competent individuals for the position of Driver/Messenger at its Head Office in Polokwane. This position plays a critical support role in ensuring the efficient movement of officials, documents, and materials, while also providing essential messenger and clerical services within the office environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe operation of departmental vehicles, effective delivery of mail and documents, and rendering routine administrative support services as required.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for appointment:

  • Grade 10 or an equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA
  • A minimum of 7–12 months relevant driving experience
  • A valid Driver’s Licence
  • A valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP)

Failure to meet these minimum requirements will result in disqualification.

Knowledge, Competencies and Skills

The successful candidate should demonstrate the following knowledge, competencies, and skills:

  • Sound knowledge of procedures for operating light and medium motor vehicles
  • Understanding of prescripts and regulations governing the correct utilisation of government motor vehicles
  • Knowledge of procedures to ensure vehicles are properly maintained and kept roadworthy
  • Knowledge of messenger services, including the handling and delivery of mail and official documents
  • Basic knowledge of routine office support functions, such as registry services, photocopying, filing, and document management
  • Good knowledge of the city, district, and surrounding areas in which duties will be performed
  • Ability to complete vehicle logbooks, trip authorities, and related records accurately and timeously
  • Good communication skills and the ability to follow instructions
  • High level of responsibility, reliability, and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Willingness to render support services when required

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

  • Driving light and medium motor vehicles to transport officials and passengers safely and efficiently
  • Delivering and collecting mail, documents, and other items to and from various destinations
  • Ensuring that all deliveries are completed timeously and securely
  • Performing routine vehicle inspections to ensure that vehicles are in a safe and roadworthy condition
  • Reporting mechanical defects, accidents, or damages to the relevant supervisor without delay
  • Ensuring vehicles are serviced according to prescribed schedules
  • Keeping vehicles clean and in good working condition at all times
  • Completing and maintaining all required vehicle logbooks, trip records, and registers
  • Adhering strictly to traffic laws, departmental policies, and road safety regulations
  • Rendering messenger services within the office, including distribution and collection of internal and external correspondence
  • Assisting with registry duties, filing, photocopying, and other routine clerical support functions
  • Providing general office support as and when required by the supervisor
  • Upholding confidentiality and ensuring the safe handling of official documents and information

Working Environment

This position is based at the Head Office in Polokwane and requires frequent movement within the city and surrounding districts. The incumbent must be prepared to work flexible hours when operational demands require it. The role requires a high level of discipline, reliability, and commitment to service delivery.

Remuneration

The position is remunerated at a salary of R193 359 per annum, which is aligned to Salary Level 04, in accordance with applicable public service regulations and policies.
